Main opposition in Jammu & Kashmir People’s Democratic Party (PDP) on Friday decided to support the ‘Save Afzal Guru’ resolution in the Legislative Assembly when it comes up for discussions on September 28.

“Yes, we will support the resolution. Heavens are not going to fall. Tamil Nadu assembly passed a resolution on similar lines. People there were involved in the killing of former prime minister who was no less a symbol than parliament”, Mehbooba Mufti, PDP president told reporters after chairing the legislature party meeting.

DNA was the first to report about the resolution submitted by independent MLA from Langate Sheikh Abdul Rasheed aka Engineer Rasheed seeking amnesty to parliament attack convict Afzal Guru on humanitarian grounds.

PDP has 21 MLAs in the 89-member lower House, which includes two nominated members also. The resolution needs simple majority to sail through in the House. Ruling National Conference with 28 MLAs and Congress with 17 members is yet to open their cards.

The BJP, however, has already made it clear that they will oppose the resolution.

“Why should there be a storm if we a pass a resolution to appeal to the president to pardon Afzal and commute his death sentence into life imprisonment. We have an example of Nalini who is involved in the killing of Rajiv Gandhi and her death sentence was commuted into life imprisonment on humanitarian grounds”, she said.

PDP chief, who is also the leader of the opposition in the Assembly, said her party has a consistent policy of opposing capital punishment. “We have said it not today but much earlier when court gave its verdict that there should be clemency to Afzal.

When home ministry recommended that his appeal should be rejected, at that time also we appealed president for clemency,” she said.
