Raising an outcry over severe power and water crisis in the state, opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) today threatened to launch a mass agitation if the situation did not improve immediately.

"There is acute dearth of water and electricity in several areas of Jammu region and parts of Kashmir valley and the government seems to be totally helpless in providing even the basic needs in this scorching summer," PDP spokesperson AK Sawhney said in a statement here.

Criticising the National Conference (NC) and Congress coalition government, Sawhney said that despite having major power projects like Baghliar, Salal and Dulhasti, there is a dearth of power in the state.

"People suffer in the state due to the wrong policies of the government, which has sold out its power projects and not kept the major share for the state," he alleged.

Pointing out at the 8-10 hour power cuts in different parts of Jammu city, the PDP spokesman alleged that the government is maintaining "criminal silence" on the matter.

Threatening to launch a mass agitation on the issue, he said "if the govt is not in a position to solve the basic problems of the people, the ministers have no moral right to hold onto the chair and should resign".
