With wedding season in full swing, seeing baraats (wedding processions) along the city streets is not an uncommon sight.

However, one such procession at midnight on Monday not only left one person severely injured but also caused mass panic among the revellers. One of the baraatis was mistakenly shot in the shoulder by a fellow participant in the incident.

The baraat was passing by Vastral road in Mahadevnagar  around 12:30 am when an over-zealous attendee, one Nareshsinh Rajput, fired a shot from his 12 bore double-barrel shotgun.

Rajput, however, did not aim the gun safely away from the wedding crowd and ended up shooting 30-year-old Rajkumarsinh Bhadoriya in the shoulder.

The incident left many from the wedding procession shaken and led to mass panic with people running amok. Bhadoriya, a resident of Narol area, was rushed to LG Hospital after the incident. His condition is said to be stable and is recuperating from the wound at the hospital.

After the firing, a panicked Rajput, 44, a native of Fatehpur in Uttar Pradesh, fled the spot. The Ramol police managed to track him down early on Monday morning and apprehended him as well as seized his shotgun. Incidentally, the accused is a relative of a city-based cop.

Meanwhile, police sources said that Rajput was not the only one carrying a firearm during the procession. The other men who had brought weapons to fire during the baraat decided to flee the city in the night and return to their native Ujjain in Madhya Pradesh.

The men, in a Mahindra Scorpio SUV, decided to make a run for it with their weapons but lost their way out of the city, and ended up in Maninagar area. Outside Pushpkunj Society, some Maninagar cops were stationed to carry out regular checking of vehicles.

The officials stopped the car on grounds of suspicion, and found that the four men were carrying five weapons, including one single-barrel and one double-barrel shotgun, one rifle, one pistol as well as one revolver.

The cops also found 20 rounds of live cartridges and 20 spent cartridge shells, suggesting that a lot of firing had taken place during the procession, a police source said.

The police officials then asked the men for their licences for the firearms, which they did not have. Another relative brought the licences which suggested their usage was limited to the state of Madhya Pradesh.

Maninagar cops held Narendra Surayavanshi (24), Ajay Tiwari (29), Rishi Verma (42) and Pankaj Mishra (33), and seized 5 firearms and cartridges as these were unlicensed for use in Gujarat.
