Surat district health officials swung into action after news spread that more than 200 residents of two villages in Olpad taluka had been affected by infectious diseases. It was epidemic-like situation in the coastal villages of Bhandut and Delasa.

Officials said preventative actions were being taken to control the situation. In both the villages, people are suffering from viral fever, malaria and chikungunya, with majority of families reporting a minimum of 2-3 patients each.

People are complaining of high fever and pain in joints and are flocking to nearby clinics and government health centres for treatment. In some families, all members are suffering from one disease or the other," said Kamlesh Patel, sarpanch of Bhandut village.
