The opposition in the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has demanded removal of Dr Rohit Jariwala, associate professor, forensic medicines and in-charge head of the post mortem department at the VS Hospital.

In 2008, an Ahmedabad district court declared Dr Jariwala hostile after his statements during a cross-examination was different from the post mortem report he had made in a murder case. Dr Jariwala was heading the panel of doctors who had conducted the post mortem on the body of Suresh Sendhaji Thakor, a resident of Vejalpur, who was murdered at Anandnagar garden.

On Thursday, opposition leader Surendra Baxi asked the authorities to sack Dr Jariwala on that ground. Baxi claimed that Dr Jariwala lost his case in high court, where he pleaded against the judgment of the lower court labeling him as 'hostile'. Baxi demanded immediate removal of the doctor from service.

The opposition also raised the issue of contractors being charged less by way of penalties for their inability to complete work on time. During AMC's standing committee meeting on Thursday, Baxi said that a contractor named M/s Jivanlal Patel had failed to complete the 5.5 km roadwork of BRTS from Vadaj to Prem Darwaja in the designated time.

Later, AMC gave the contract to another contractor and fined M/s Jivanlal for the 20 day delay in work. Baxi claimed that AMC is acting soft on the contractor by fining him only for the 20 days delay. He demanded that the contractor should be fined for all the extensions given to him. "Even after giving him an extra time of 2 months, he completed only 5% of the work. Why is the AMC acting soft on such laidback contractors?" asked Baxi.

The opposition also argued on the penalty being charged from a contractor who was given the work of constructing a 10-storey hospital-cum-medical college building at Maninagar's LG hospital.

AMC has approved an extension for M/s Patel infrastructure to complete the work, and charged penalty for the work being done after the extension.

Baxi said that the penalty charged for delayed work is very less. "The deadline to finish the work was April 2010, but the contractor was given time till February 2011. Why did the AMC allow him an extension of 10 months?" asked Baxi, who also claimed that AMC has raised the previous estimated cost according to the demands made by the contractor.
