Cutting across party lines, BJP, SP, CPI(M) and RLD today decried the government for still not paying adequate compensation to 26/11 victims.

Even after 365 days all the 26/11 victims have not got compensation yet, BJP leader Prakash Javadekar told reporters outside Parliament.

"There were a total of 403 victims, including 164 killed, in Mumbai terror attack last year. But only 118 families have got the compensation. In many cases the Rs3 lakh cheque given by the home ministry have bounced," Javadekar said.

Accusing the rail ministry for failing to fulfil job promises, he said though 52 were killed at Mumbai's CST railway station, only 20 have got jobs till date."

"Even the promise by Petroleum Ministry is also not fulfilled. Now they are saying they will provide Rs25,000 only to victim families instead of petrol pumps promised earlier," he said.

RLD MP Jayant Chaudhury said there was a lacunae on the part of the government to pay adequate compensation to victim families.

However, apart from compensation, he questioned the preparedness to tackle such a terror attack in the future.

"It seems to me insufficient. What are the steps we have taken to prevent black money being used by terror network?" he asked.

Besides diplomatic pressure on Pakistan, the strengthening of the police and intelligence network should be continued vigorously, Choudhury said.

Terming it unfortunate, CPI(M) leader Sitaram Yechury said though it has been a year now, compensation has not reached the victim families yet.

"As our preparedness is concerned, we need a preventive mechanism in place. We are still not free from danger yet. Good thing is no such incident recurred after 26/11. But we cannot lower our guard. There is a need for better coordination between intelligence agencies," Yechury said.

SP leader Amar Singh said his party was ready to give compensation provided he was given a complete list of victims.

"There are many families who have not got any compensation yet. How many days are required to pay compensation to these families?" he asked.

Filmmaker turned MP Shyam Benegal said, "It seems there is no urgency in paying compensation to victims. There is also a lack of urgency in our preparedness."

However, he said many hotels were now taking a lot of precautionary measures which was a good sign. "We need to be vigilant enough to see that nothing like this ever happens in the country."
