Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi today said only the high command could take a decision on the party's alliance in Tamil Nadu for the assembly elections due early next year.

"The issue will be taken to the party high command, who alone will decide such matters. The youth Congress alone cannot do it," he told party workers at a meeting Tirupur.

Gandhi's remarks came in response to the demand from a section of the workers against continuation of the party's alliance with Dravida Munnettra Kazhagam (DMK) in Tamil Nadu.

With unprecedented security in place, mediapersons were not allowed anywhere near the venue.

Party workers who attended the meeting said Gandhi had told them he would try to give good representation to youth during the coming assembly elections.

Interacting with nearly 10,000 workers of nearly 13 parliamentary constituencies, Gandhi said the volunteers should go closer to people and work for them, so that the party could be strengthened at all levels.
