The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation’s survey of legality of under construction buildings, after the fatal incident in Saudagar ni Pol on January 28, has revealed shocking facts.

Only 12 buildings out of 147 ones under construction in five wards of the central zone of AMC are legally constructed which amounts to only 8.16% of the total under construction buildings.

Moreover, the estate department of AMC’s central zone has initiated action against only 72 such buildings. There are 30 ongoing constructions in the Kalupur ward, but the survey team could not collect information about the same.

The survey teams collected information regarding legality of the under construction buildings from Dariapur, Shahpur, Raikhad, Jamalpur and Khadia wards of the central zone. Out of these, Jamalpur has emerged as a major hub of illegal construction activities.

The survey shows that there are 42 such buildings in Jamalpur ward and construction of only one building has either approved the plans or in-warded the same with the civic body. The estate department demolished two buildings in Jamalpur, while 17 were given show-cause notices (260) for not demolishing building and three got primary notice (267).

Jamalpur is followed by Khadia with same number of under construction buildings. However, the builders of eight buildings have completed or initiated statutory formalities. The survey also reveals that none of the 31 under construction buildings in Dariapur ward are illegal.

The survey team could not find out the status of 30 under construction buildings in Kalupur because of land mafias. “One of the inspectors of estate department was thrashed and bullied by the people involved in illegal construction activities in Kalupur and the papers were destroyed,” said sources in AMC.

The survey also shows that there are 71 rickety buildings in above mentioned five wards of the central zone. Dariapur ward tops the list with 29 nine shaky buildings, followed by Jamalpur and Khadia with 17 each.  The estate department has pulled down seven buildings and actions will be taken against the other illegal buildings.
