The onset of monsoon did bring smiles on the faces of people in the state. And now when the monsoon has set in completely, there are some parts of the state, which have already received excess rains whereas some parts are yet to receive 100% rains.

As per the latest reports of the Revenue Department, Gujarat government, the average rainfall in the state has been 79.24%. On the one side there is South Gujarat, which has received merely 62.21% of rain, the lowest in the state, and on the other side is the Kutch region, which has already received 162.85% rain, the highest in the state.

The monsoon has not been uniform in the entire state this year. After 2007, which saw a rainfall of 121.58% of the state's average rainfall, it decreased over the years with 2008 witnessing 99.11% rains and in 2009 it further fell to 73.15% of the state's average.

This year, though the state's average rainfall has increased to 79.24%, the southern part of Gujarat has not reaped the benefits, which has otherwise been reaped by regions like Kutch and Saurashtra. Even North Gujarat and East-Central Gujarat have neared 100% rainfall.

But all the districts of South Gujarat region have received less than 100% rainfall, with Tapi getting the lowest rains in terms of percentage, merely 43.58%. Even Surat, which received 90.54% rainfall during the previous year, has merely reached 60% in 2010, witnessing just 59.19% of rains. A maximum of 75.23% of rain has been witnessed in Bharuch in the southern region.

In terms of volume, it is the southern part of Gujarat, which has been receiving maximum rains. This is also one of the reasons, as to despite, other regions of the state getting monsoon near to 100% or more than 100%, the rainfall in the southern part has taken the overall average down, along with the percentage of rainfall.

After Kutch, it is Saurashtra which has received the maximum rains in terms of percentage, to the tune of 111.14% followed by North Gujarat region. The East-Central region of Gujarat is again a region, which has received comparatively less rainfall but more as compared to Southern Gujarat. All the districts in this region have had a considerable increase in rains as compared to previous year with Ahmedabad being the only district nearing 100%, whereas, all others have witnessed less than 100% rainfall.
