The Supreme Court (SC) has put its seal of approval on a health ministry panel’s suggestion that a common, nation-wide examination be held for admission to both graduate and post-graduate courses in government and private medical colleges.

The panel, set up to run Medical Council of India (MCI), had said such an exam would lessen the burden on students, who had been till now running from one centre to another to take 10-15 tests held by different colleges and universities across the country.

A common entrance exam will allow a student to give one best shot, MCI said.

The Supreme Court order, which comes into force from this academic year, may benefit at least 6 lakh students, allowing them to focus energies on a single all-India exam.

A bench of justices RV Raveendran and AK Patnaik noted that since the decision in this regard had already been notified, MCI and the Centre could go ahead with the common entrance test (CET).

MCI lawyers Amarendra Sharan and Somesh Jha pointed out that the Centre had taken the stand on August 13 last year that MCI can conduct CET and issued a regulation to the effect in December.

After southern states, Tamil Nadu in particular, where CET would interfere with an existing reservation system, opposed the exam, MCI moved SC last October.

The court, in an interim order on December 18, allowed it to go ahead with CET, but also decided to hear stakeholders - state governments, private medical colleges and those run by minorities - who might have objections.

But now Supreme Court has refused to interfere with the implementation of the MCI notification and said aggrieved parties may directly approach the council.
