It was supposed to be just another lecture on how civil engineering has evolved over the last decade. But it turned out to be an interesting talk about how similar life and concrete can be.

And the credit for the interesting comparison rests solely with CM  Dordi, corporate head (SCG and PQM) of Ambuja Cement. Using wit and humour, Dordi brought out the similarity between handling life and managing concrete. He was speaking at the two day national symposium 'CONTECH-09' organised at Nirma University on Friday.

The event is being organised by organisation of civil engineering students. Addressing a gathering of around 300 students at the Nirma University campus, Dordi said that right mixture of cement is vital for a strong and durable structure.

He said water and cement share a love-hate relationship. To the amusement of students, Dordi an expert on concrete said "Life was not easy as concrete was difficult to master. It is probably more difficult than our better half."

Dordi is an expert on concrete and has already published numerous papers and delivered hundreds of lectures in India and across the world. Commenting on the constructions trends in Ahmedabad, Dordi said, "We still use low grade concrete such as M-20, M-25 for most of our construction."  He said that people should use high grade concrete.  He also suggested that builders and civil engineers in the city need to equip themselves with modern tools.

Explaining the problem with Indian constructions, Dordi said, "Our civil engineers need formal practical apprenticeship training and hands on experience for better result. Only then the romance with concrete will succeed."

The day-long event also had lectures on relevance of traditional materials and technologies in contemporary context, and workshop on disaster management and contingency planning. Events like poster and flyover submissions, business quiz and others were also organised.
