About 1,000 Odiya families living in and around Gandhinagar and Ahmedabad will come together to celebrate Utkal Divas (April 1), the foundation day of Odisha, at a mega cultural programme in Gandhinagar on Friday. The programme will be inaugurated by Gujarat's minister for health and tourism, Jaynarayan Vyas.

This year, the Utkal Divas programme is being jointly organised by Gandhinagar Odiya Samaj, a group of Odiya families staying in Gandhinagar, and Orissa Socio-Cultural Association (OSCA), Ahmedabad. The programme will be held at Ranga Manch in Sector 22 in the state capital.

According to a release, people staying in places like Naroda, Surat and Mehsana will also join the celebration. The organisers have also invited many Gujarati families and other well-wishers.
The four-hour programme which will start at 6:30 pm will include a variety of cultural events highlighting the glimpses of Odisha and Gujarat. It will also include a light and sound show,  special performances on Odiya and Gujarati culture, and Odiya dishes. A group of Odiya artists has been specially invited from Odisha to perform at the programme.

Others who will attend the programme include Hitenbhai Barot, executive director of Creative Infocity Ltd, Gandhinagar, and HK Dash, principal secretary of Narmada water resources, water supply and Kalpasar department, Gujarat.

The Utkal Divas celebration is a sacred and significant day for the people of Odisha. The relentless struggle of the visionary leaders of Odisha for the formation of a separate province on the basis of language was realised on April 1, 1936 and Odisha emerged as the first language- based state in the country.

" The Utkal Divas celebration in the state will inspire thoughts for establishing peace, prosperity and progress in society," said SK Mishra, president of Gandhinagar Odiya Samaj.
