The Congress demanded the list of vital documents of the state intelligence bureau and the Ahmedabad city police commissionerate on Tuesday. The development happened during the hearing of the issue related to cross examination of IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt.

The party, which is also appearing before the Nanavati and Mehta inquiry commission, has moved an application before the panel stating that it is vital to get these documents from various agencies.

This includes the office of the director general of police (DGP), additional director general of police (ADGP) and Ahmedabad police commissioner.

It demanded the documents on the grounds that Bhatt has made important revelations regarding the role of the chief minister Narendra Modi and former minister of state for home Amit Shah during the 2002 riots. Bhatt, during his cross examination, had stated that Modi and his close aide Shah had tried to influence him so that he would not state the correct fact before the Supreme Court appointed Special Investigation Team (SIT).
The SIT is probing cases of communal riots that happened during 2002. Congress lawyers, Hiralal Gupta and JC Parmar stated that the role of Modi and Shah deserves further inquiry.

"We need to find out what role they have played in either instigating, abetting, assisting or in any manner facilitating or permitting the riots," they said.

They further said that to make clear the role played by the state government it is a must for the state to disclose all the facts which are kept in its archives.

The party said that therefore the DGP, ADGP and police commissioner of Ahmedabad should be directed to produce documents for the period commencing from the morning (6.00 am) of February 27, 2002 to midnight of March 09, 2002.

The documents that the Congress wants includes register of incoming and outgoing telephonic messages of the control room of state IB, duties register of the state control room etc.

"Movement diary and the log-book of vehicle used by DGP, the duties list of the drivers of the state control room, alert messages received by the same, copies of documents forwarded by Bhatt about the Godhra incident and its intelligence analysis are also needed," they said.

From Ahmedabad police commissioner, the Congress wants list of incoming and outgoing telephonic and wireless messages, names of officers among others.
