The Ahmedabad Municipal School Board, an autonomous education body of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC), has decided to make the competency test compulsory for all teachers.

The school board has decided to conduct the tests on May 9, 2010. It should be noted that around 4,000 teachers had bunked a similar test that was conducted in December 2009. Asit Vora, chairman of AMC's standing committee had earlier said in the budget session of the civic body that the school board will conduct a competency test for the primary teachers.

Vora had also warned that those who bunked the test would have to face the consequence. Taking cue from Vora, the education body passed a resolution to this effect at its meeting on Monday.  Lagdhir Desai, administration officer of Ahmedabad Municipal School Board, said that the board wants to check the competency of the teachers just as the state government reviews performance and physical competency of its employees at the age of around 50-55 years.  "There is no need for the teachers to panic as we will not take any action against a teacher who fails to clear the test," said Desai. The board will also conduct a training programme -self-orientation for primary teachers (SOPT) — for those teachers who fail the test.

However, the teachers bunking the test will have to face disciplinary action. Moreover, the school board has also decided to allow non-government organisations to work towards improving the quality of education and infrastructure in municipal schools.

However, these organisations will have to work as a support system and they will not be able to make any claims on the basis of the service provided by them.

The school board has also decided not to pay money to the contractor who added four extra pages to the primer following a verbal order given by the former chairman of school board.  The board said that as the tender for printing primers did not mention about the extra pages the contractor will not be paid for the same.

The school board has kept on hold a decision regarding the dismissal of assistant administration officer Ismail Sheikh for tampering with birth certificate.
