Senior CBI officials said a letter rogatory was likely to be issued to UK authorities about the criminal charges against Patel.
London-based Ashish Patel, who has been in the eye of a storm for striking alleged dubious deals with members of the Commonwealth Games organising committee (OC), may soon find the going tough as Indian probe agencies are set to officially seek the help of British authorities against him.
Senior CBI officials said a letter rogatory was likely to be issued to UK authorities about the criminal charges against Patel. Letter rogatory is a formal request from a court in one country to judicial authorities in another requesting testimony, documentary or any other evidence in a registered case.
Patel, who has been named by CBI in two cases pertaining to contracts awarded for the queen’s baton relay in London last year, is already facing a seven-year ban by the UK registrar of companies. He has been disqualified as director of AM Films and AM Cars from March 2010 to 2017.
CBI had registered two cases on Monday claiming that OC officials conspired with Patel to awarded contracts to AM Films and AM Cars at exorbitant rates without following the standard tendering process.
“Works for installation of video screens were awarded at exorbitant rates and on the basis of fake quotations,” a senior official of the agency noted.
CBI also pointed out that “two emails”, allegedly flashed by OC chairman Suresh Kalmadi at a press conference in August to justify selection of Patel’s firms, were forged. Kalmadi had claimed that the Indian high commission in the UK had recommended Patel’s name.
“The work was awarded on the false premise that the firm [AM Films] was on the panel of Indian high commission in London,” the official said.
