No review of present system of appointment of judges: Govt

Replying to a question, law and justice minister Veerappa Moily, said that the government adheres to the 1993 judgment of the apex court while appointing judges in the higher judiciary.

The government has no plans to review the present system of appointing judges in the high courts and the Supreme Court, law and justice minister Veerappa Moily said in the Rajya Sabha.

Replying to a question, he said the government adheres to the 1993 judgment of the apex court while appointing judges in the higher judiciary. "There is no proposal at present before the government to reconsider this procedure," Moily said said during Question Hour.

Asked to state the official view on changing the procedure of judges' appointment, he said, "The government has not taken a view on it (to review the current system)." He said the government is aware that the matter has drawn attention of parliamentarians, jurists and others.

The minister, however, said the government is working out details of a new bill on judicial standards and accountability of judges.
