A green panel has approved the setting up of two Special Economic Zones (SEZs) in the national capital by noting that the projects do not fall under its ambit as their land size is less than 500 hectare.

"We have been told recently by the State Expert Appraisal Committee (SEAC) that we do not require environment clearance nor there is need for Environment Impact Assessment study, a pre-condition for starting any project.

"Both the SEZs do not house Category A and Category B industrial projects (pollution emitting units) and also the requirement of land is less than 500 hectare," said a senior official from the Delhi State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation (DSIIDC).

He said the proposed IT and IT-enabled and jems and jewellery SEZs at Baprolla in Northwest Delhi do not fall under the purview of EIA Notification.

The proposed area for the SEZ projects, to be developed by DSIIDC at an estimated cost of nearly Rs 700 crore, is 10.52 hectare and 16.76 hectare respectively.

The industrial agency had approached the SEAC seeking clarification with respect to applicability of EIA Notification, 2006 for the development of the two SEZs.

The official said DSIIDC, the government's premier infrastructure development agency, will hold 26% equity in both the SEZs.

The gems and jewellery SEZ, to be spread over 41.4 acres of land at Baprola village, will have facilities for identification, grading and certification of diamond as well as a world-class Gems and Jewellery Training Institute.

It is expected to provide direct employment to 18,000 people and indirect employment to 54,000 people.

The second SEZ for promoting IT sector, which will be set up on 26 acres of land, is expected to provide direct employment to 36,000 people and indirect employment to another 1,08,000.
