Even as the city on Sunday was trying to recover from the euphoria of India's win in the World Cup finals a day earlier, Nirma University was celebrating a success of a very different kind. The 11th convocation of Nirma University for its management and PhD students was held on its campus on Sunday.

A total of 330 management students and 13 PhD students were conferred degrees at the convocation where the chief guest was chairman and managing director of JM Financials, Nimesh Kampani.

Of the 330 management students conferred degrees, 170 were full-time MBA students, 106 were from MBA-Family Business and Entrepreneurship (FBE) course and 54 students from the MBA (part-time) programme.

Of the 13 successful PhD students, 5 were Pharmacy students, 5 from science disciplines, 2 from technology and engineering, and 1 from management.

"Nirma University is one of the top private universities of India," said Dr NV Vasani, director general of the university. Speaking on the occasion, president of the university, Dr Karsanbhai Patel, urged the students to become employers and entrepreneurs at the earliest. "After a few years of service, students should become independent as entrepreneurs. This will benefit many -the students, the society and the economy as a whole."

Vasani stated that participation of new companies like Ranbaxy Lab were the highlights of this year's placements.
The other newcomers to the placements at Nirma were companies from sectors such as pharmaceuticals, micro-finance and FMCGs, he said.

The highest pay package offered this year was Rs10 lakh per annum. Over 40 companies participated in this year's placements. The topper of MBA-FBE, Mohit Singhvi, got emotional while talking about his days as a Nirma student.

"It is a matter of pride for me that I was a student at Nirma. I'm a CA final student as well. After finishing CA, I will initially work for my family business. But soon, I'll start my own venture."
Jay Rajani, topper of MBA (part-time) programme, was equally happy. "It is always exciting to be awarded a prestigious degree," he said.
