The dual certificate programme in photography design at the National Institute of Design (NID) in Ahmedabad, jointly conducted with the University of Creative Arts (UCA) in London, received its validation when the two institutions signed a memorandum of understanding on Friday.

Along with the validation, NID received 50,000 pounds as a development grant for the programme, to be used over a period of three years. The amount will be used for the development of the teaching staff, library resources and equipment required for the programme, which recently completed its first year.

"NID and UCA have agreed to collaborate in the establishment of joint programmes of study in the future. The one-year programme in photography at NID will also become a two-year programme from this year," said Dr Vijaya Deshmukh, registrar of NID.

While NID will offer a post-graduate diploma in photography design, UCA will offer a Master's in Fine Arts degree in photography under the dual degree programme.

"The photography course is a response to the exponential growth of the publication, exhibition, curation and the art market of photography in India in recent years. UCA and NID will provide comparable support to the students, offering counselling, learning support, career services and spiritual support. The course encourages students to intensify, challenge and contextualise their work," said Deepak John, programme coordinator of the photography design department at NID.

Delegates from UCA, including vice-chancellor Mark Hunt; dean of art, design and architecture, Laurence Wood; course leader of photography, Anna Fox; quality assurance manager Malcolm Cumming; director of the photographers' gallery, Brett Rogers; dean of research and innovation in creative arts, Sarah Jeans; and faculty member of the Royal College of Art, Peter Kennard, were present at NID for the validation of the dual-certificate course.
