Amdavadis may now get to breathe easy as far as traffic jams in the city are concerned. For, the all new traffic brigade constituted by the Ahmedabad traffic police department is set to play an important role in regulating traffic in the city.

The brigade will also be lending a helping had to the traffic policemen posted at key points in the city.

DCP (traffic) MM Anarwala told DNA that the traffic brigade will be on duty for 8 hours along with the routine police personnel at various traffic points in the city.

“Members of the traffic brigade will assist personnel in diversion and regulation of traffic. The personnel are professionally very sound,” said Anarwala.

Officials said that traffic brigade members will also be posted at some traffic points which at present are not manned by traffic personnel.

More than 400 students, all of them higher secondary pass-outs, have been trained for six weeks to be part of the traffic brigade. They ‘graduated’ on Monday. Graduates and working women also form part of the brigade.

Following a parade march at the police stadium on Monday, the members of the brigade took an oath to serve the society. Joint commissioner of police (JCP), traffic, Atul Karwal said that the concept of a brigade was first implemented in Surat.

“I believe that the brigade will do a good job. The initiative has been supported by all the leading industrialists and traffic enthusiasts of the city,” Karwal said.

Ekta Chavda (28), a member of the brigade said she quit her job at Reliance communications to be a part of the police force.  “I always wanted to join the police force and that is why I am here. I quit my job for this one,” said Chavda. Jayesh Prajapati, a B.Com graduate said he took the training as he loved the uniform.

“I became a member of the brigade to serve the country. I don’t want money but my father told me to make a name for myself which I wanted to do,” said Prajapati. The members of the brigade will be paid Rs120 per day.

Commissioner of police, SK Saikia said they were also in talks with the concerned authorities to offer reduced fares for AMTS buses for various members of the brigade.  “We are also trying to work out a mechanism whereby brigade members can be deployed in areas close to their homes,” he said.
