The government will shortly announce a unique conditional maternity benefit scheme to provide Rs4,000 to women during pregnancy and six months after that, while they are lactating.
The Indira Gandhi Matritava Sahyog Yojana (IGMSY) will be for women who are 19 or above, and for the first two child births, including still-births.
It will be over and above the Rs1,400 in rural areas and Rs1,500 in urban areas a woman gets under the health ministry’s Janani Suraksha Yojana (JSY) to promote institutional delivery.
Unlike JSY, which is only for women below the poverty line (BPL), the new scheme will also be applicable to above poverty line (APL) categories.
About 50,000 women are expected to benefit from it in each district.
“Working women, like private school teachers, salesgirls, maidservants, factory workers, housewives, and those working in the unorganised sector, can avail of its benefits provided they get themselves registered with the nearest anganwadi centres during pregnancy,” said Sree Ranjan, joint secretary, women and child development (WCD) ministry.
However, government servants and public sector employees will be excluded as they are already entitled to maternity benefits.
Union minister for woman and child development Krishna Tirath said the scheme will particularly benefit those who are not paid maternity leave. “Besides taking care of nutritional requirements, the scheme will partly compensate the woman for wage loss she may incur while caring for herself and the child,” Tirath said.
Ministry officials said the scheme will help monitor and prevent infant mortality, maternal mortality, malnutrition, early marriage and female foeticide, and will promote safe delivery.
