With Allahabad High Court Friday setting aside acquisition of land in three villages of Noida and neighbouring areas, Congress today underlined the need for enacting a new comprehensive land acquisition law soon, saying only this can provide solution to such issues.

"The basic solution to it will happen when there will be a comprehensive, strong and effective legal structure for land acquisition at the national level, when we bring a fundamental change in the national land acquisition law," party spokesperson Abhishek Singhvi said.

Admitting that enactment of such a law is taking time, Singhvi attributed it to the UPA's efforts to take all stakeholders on board and seek the views of all states on the crucial issue.

"We hope that there will not be too much delay and we we will be able to bring the bill (before Parliament soon)," he said.

Asked whether the process of land acquisition adopted by Mayawati government was responsible for the current situation, Singhvi said, "This is a larger issue. We require a strong structure for land acquisition."

He said that the UPA government is committed to bring the new law stressing that it was the Congress which first took an initiative in this direction.

AICC general secretary Rahul Gandhi was keen that the bill be passed in the winter session of Parliament.

In a setback to the Mayawati government and thousands of apartment buyers, the Allahabad High Court today set aside acquisition of land in three villages of Noida, Greater Noida and Noida Extension areas while ordering enhanced compensation to farmers of some other villages in Gautam Budh Nagar district.
