Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi's criticism of celebrating Jawaharlal Nehru's birthday, November 14, as 'Children Day' has not gone down well with the state's Congress ranks.

Former leader of opposition in Gujarat Assembly, Arjun Modhwadia has asked Modi to focus on providing food to the around 47% children of Gujarat who are suffering from malnutrition.

Lashing out at Modi for his remarks about the freedom fighters for saying that his political forefathers were slaves of the British, Modhwadia said, "It is quite natural for him (Modi) to have disregard for the freedom fighters, but he does not have any right to humiliate the leaders of the stature of Nehru," in a statement issued on Sunday.

He said that Nehru wrote letters to his daughter Indira from the jail in order to teach her about India's rich history and culture and the world, besides science, letters that have been published in form of a renowned book. "On the other hand, people of Gujarat have more knowledge about Nehru's critic, chief minister Modi's relations with his wife, mother and brothers," Modhwadia said.

Citing Health and Family Welfare Survey of 2009, the leader said that Gujarat has the highest number of children suffering from malnutrition.

Stating that it is surprising to note that number of children suffering from malnutrition is increasing after 1999, he said that around 43% children below three years of age are underweight, while the same is 46% at the national level.

Moreover, 46% children of Gujarat have lower height compared to 38% children at the national level, he added.

Alleging that looking at the alarming rate of Mother Mortality Ratio (MMR) and Infant Mortality Ratio (IMR) in the state even the planning commission had to take up the issue with the Gujarat chief minister.

Continuing the bashing, the Congress leader stated that even school dropout ratio in Gujarat is as high as 4.2%, adding that Modi must pay attention to these priorities rather than lecturing on 'Good Governance'.
