Emile Jerome Matthew, a former navy man arrested for allegedly murdering media executive Neeraj Grover, was beaten up in Arthur Road jail, the Bombay high court was informed on Wednesday.
A report submitted by deputy registrar (judicial) Ashokkumar Bhillare says that force was used on Jerome as he was being aggressive and violent. Additional public prosecutor Mankuwar Deshmukh submitted the confidential report to the court in a sealed cover. “Jerome’s behaviour was aggressive. He was violent, and in order to control him, the jail staff used force,” the report states.
The report also includes statements of other inmates like 1993 blast accused Mustafa Dossa. After going through the report, justice BH Marlapalle remarked: “There are findings that force was used (on him).”
Emile Jerome had filed a petition in the court alleging that jail authorities beat him up in November last year.
But Deshmukh justified the act by saying, “He threatened one of the officers. When the officers tried to stop him, he fell on a pile of sand [thereby injuring himself],” she told the court, adding that an FIR was then lodged against Jerome for threatening the officer.
Earlier, when a preliminary medical report was submitted, the court had observed that there were at least 14 injuries on Jerome’s body.
Jerome’s advocate Khan Abdul Wahab refuted the allegations saying that Jerome was assaulted since he had filed a petition seeking transfer back to his earlier barrack, where extradited gangster Abu Salem was lodged.
“After the jail authorities were served with a notice, they thrashed Jerome. The lodging of the FIR is just for cover up,” Khan alleged.
