After a “fruitful outing” in the US, where it interrogated 26/11 accused David Coleman Headley of the Lashkar-e-Taiba for a week, the four-member national investigation agency (NIA) team is on its way back home. It is reported to have gathered significant clues relating to the Mumbai terror attack.

Home ministry sources said the team would submit a detailed report to the ministry in New Delhi. It is only after analysing the report that the government would formulate its opinion on the issue. A detailed presentation on the week-long interrogation will be made on June 15,” a source said.

The source revealed the team found out about Headley’s ISI links
and his other handlers in the Pakistan establishment. Significant information has also been gathered establishing his Indian links.
“The direct access given to the four-member team of NIA has proved to be useful and successful,” both Indian and US authorities said.

It is learnt that Headley confessed to his involvement in the Mumbai terror attack.

The US justice department said as per agreement, he replied to all questions posed by NIA. The home ministry source confirmed the interrogation was held in a free atmosphere without restrictions.

As per an agreement between the US and India, details of the interrogation would not be disclosed immediately to protect confidentiality of the entire process.

“The disclosure will be made at an appropriate time with the consent of both sides,” the source said.

In a statement, Indian high commissioner in the US Meera Shankar said the questioning by NIA was important to understand the mystery of the 26/11 attack.

“The support extended by US authorities is appreciable and is in keeping with the commitment of the two countries to strengthen cooperation in jointly facing the challenge of terrorism,” she said.
On his part, US ambassador to India Timothy  Roemer said the NIA team did a series of “interviews” with Headley. “I am proud to confirm these efforts were successful,” he said.
