Chandigarh Police claimed on Thursday to have cracked the sensational Nari Niketan Rape Case with the arrest of a former security guard at Ashreya, an institute for the mentally-challenged run by the government medical college and hospital in the city.

Chhotu Ram alias Madho Ram, 32, who is an attendant at the hospital, was arrested on Wednesday for raping a 19-year-old inmate of the nari niketan after DNA samples of her baby girl matched with his.

The breakthrough came almost eight months after the detection of the crime on May 18 and at least five other arrests, including that of two watchmen, an attendant-cum-sweeper, a nurse-cum-attendant and another employee of the nari niketan in May and June.

One of the watchmen arrested on June 11, Jamna Dass, an ex-serviceman, was accused of raping the mentally-unstable woman several times in an inebriated condition and Maya, the nurse-cum-attendant arrested on June 19, of abetting the crime. She was also accused of destroying crucial evidence by tearing off a page of a register in which a record of the menstrual cycle of every inmate was being maintained. They were charge-sheeted on August 13. After the inmate’s pregnancy was confirmed in July, the Punjab and Haryana high court had directed the Chandigarh administration to medically terminate it, but the Supreme Court ruled against the order.

DSP Kulwant Singh Pannu, who led the investigation, said police received the DNA report from the Central Forensic Sciences Laboratory (CFSL) in Delhi on Monday. The DSP said Ram had confessed to committing the rape. He has been remanded in police custody till December 26. The father of two was a security guard at Ashreya before he was shifted to the hospital in April.
