The launch of Sanand plant of Tata Motors, where the world’s cheapest car, Nano, will be produced, is just a few days away.

According to officials, search is on for a suitable date to launch the plant.

“The Tata Nano plant in Sanand is ready for commercial production. It is likely to be formally launched in the next few weeks,” a senior government official told DNA.

The official said that the original plan was to launch the Sanand plant on May 1, to coincide with completion of 50 years of Gujarat’s statehood. However, the launch could not take place on the day for some reasons, and now dates for the plant’s formal launch are being worked out.

“The plant will be inaugurated by chief minister Narendra Modi. Tata Group chairman Ratan Rata will remain present on the occasion. A date suitable to both of them is being worked out,” said the official, adding that the launch is expected to take place in the very near future.

According to officials, Sanand plant will have an initial capacity of producing 2,50,000 Nano cars a year, which will be eventually increased to 3,50,000 cars. Tata Motors has invested around Rs2,000 crore for the Sanand plant. Currently, Nano is being produced in Tata’s plant at Pantnagar.
