After exposure of the report of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) that has put chief minister Narendra Modi under  suspicion for his role in the 2002 communal riots, now all eyes are awaiting the proposed report of the Nanavati and Mehta Commission.

The GT Nanavati and Akshay Mehta commission is probing the Godhra riots to determine responsibility behind the most heinous massacre that happened in the state.

The commission, in its first report, supported the line of the state government that the Sabarmati Express train carnage, which fuelled the communal fury and subsequent riots, was pre-planned conspiracy.

Now the commission has completed the mammoth task of collecting thousands of evidences and taken hundreds of testimonies of the riot victims. Recently, it had slapped notice to eight cops including two IPS officers MK Tandon and PB Gondia, and gave them opportunity to put up their defence.

The commission has issued notices to the cops under section 8B of the commission of inquiries Act and it means the commission can ask explanation from the persons before any possibility of noting adverse findings against them.

We can at least expect from the Nanavati commission the chance to allow us to conduct cross-examination of chief minister Narendra Modi after SIT put him under the scanner," said advocate Mukul Sinha, convenor of the Jan Sangharsh Manch (JSM) which is fighting for the riot victims.

"Our question is whether it was the failure of the state administration or was criminal connivance," said Sinha who added, "Looking to the SIT's report now, it has sufficient evidence to summon Modi. In addition to that they have the power to question the CM's role as it falls under one of the references of the Nanavati Commission."

JSM had earlier moved an application seeking to call Modi and others for cross examination. It had put many evidences including telephone call records showing contact with officers of the Chief Minister's Office (CMO), the then home minister Gordhan Zadafia and a couple of police officers.
