Ajinder Kaur Mann, the 75-year-old mother-in-law of officiating advocate general (AG) of Punjab Rupinder Khosla, was allegedly strangled in her upscale sector 21 house in Chandigarh, police claimed on Thursday. The body was found by her maid.

Police suspect Ajinder Kaur, who lived alone, was killed at least two to three days ago because her body had started to decompose.

They claimed the victim was sexually assaulted as some of her garments were removed.

The body has been sent for post-mortem and police were trying to ascertain the cause of the death. The identity of the perpetrators had not been established at the time of going to press. But police suspect the criminals could be drug addicts.

“They [murderers] were apparently aware of the fact that she was living alone. The case in under investigation,” they said.

The three daughters of the victim — one married to an additional AG and two to IAS officers — have been called to assist in investigations. Khosla, one of many additional AGs of Punjab, was appointed officiating AG five months ago.

DS Singh, a neighbour, expressed shocked at the incident and said the victim did not socialise much and was not keeping well for some time. Singh and his family members denied having heard any call for help from the victim’s house.

Less than 24 hours ago, a five-year-old was found murdered in Chandigarh on Wednesday. Khushpreet Singh was kidnapped from outside his house on December 21 and killed by unidentified people after they received a ransom of Rs4 lakh from his father.
