Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) may be proud of its Sabarmati Riverfront Project, but residents living alongside it are unimpressed.

The project has only beautified the banks of the river with majority of people lacking even the basic amenities. Apartment dwellers next to Subhash Bridge are complaining of mosquito menace in the area.

"Our condition has remained the same despite construction of the riverfront," say residents who have been living in the area for many years now. Stinking environs, dirty percolated water are breeding grounds for mosquito larvae. Residents had hoped had this would have changed after construction of the riverfront but things have only become worse.

"I have been staying here for 10 years now but the mosquito menace continues to exist. There has been no reduction (in mosquitoes) even after riverfront's construction," said Harshadbhai Pandya of Maheshwari Apartments in the area.

Since flowing water has been checked at Vasna, water stagnates in Subhash Bridge area. This results in foul smell and a fertile breeding ground for mosquitoes, said another resident. Drainage water also percolates here. "Spraying by AMC to eradicate mosquitoes has become irregular in the area, which further increases our troubles," he added.

Residents have complained about the matter several times to local corporators and authorities, but it has been in vain. "Only property rates have gone up due to the riverfront, but mosquitoes and bad smell are a blight on this ambitious project," said Nikhil Sharma who lives in Mahaprakash Apartments nearby.

When DNA contacted a Sabarmati Riverfront Development Corporation Limited (SRFDCL) official, he said that he was unaware of the unhygienic situation. "Drainage channels at Dandi Canal and Ranip are not closed yet and waste continues to flow into Sabarmati River. The upcoming sewage plant at Ranip will solve hygiene issues of the residents,” said the official.
