Finally, the civic body and denizens of the city can heave a sigh of relief. After coping with the rising number of mosquitoes in the city and the huge number of cases of malaria and dengue, here comes good news.

According to the door-to-door survey conducted by the malaria department of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC), the density of malaria and dengue mosquitoes has decreased considerably.

According to the data shared by entomologist at AMC, Dr Vijay Kohli, "If we look at the figures of the past few months, they show that the density is decreasing. The density of the Anopheles breed (which causes malaria) was 0.19 per room in August, which  decreased to 0.08 in September. Last month, the figure was 0.

This indicates that in the last two months, the city has witnessed a 100% per cent decrease in the density of Anopheles mosquitoes."
Similarly, for Aedes breed of mosquitoes (causing dengue), the density per room in August was 2.29, which slipped to 1.21 in September and in October the figure reduced to 0.15, indicating a fall of 93% in the last two months.

Speaking to DNA, Dr Kohli said, "Due to reduction in temperature of the city, the density of mosquitoes has decreased considerably. The ideal temperature for their maximum activity is 26-28 degree Celsius. Now, with the arrival of winter and the decrease of temperature, the mosquitoes start hibernating and their activity becomes slow."

He added that during the ideal temperature, mosquitoes need an intake of blood once in two to three days, while during winter the intake needed is once in four to five days. With this, the city will witness lesser number of cases of disease.
