If you blame the rise in number of four-wheelers and three-wheelers for the congestion on city roads, have a rethink. According to a study by Centre for Environmental Planning and Technology (Cept) University in 2009, out of around 18 lakh vehicles in the city, two-wheelers constituted more than 14 lakh.

The research, conducted by HM Shivanand Swamy, professor and associate director of the university, also indicated that three out of four residents used a two-wheeler for regular commuting.

According to the study, two-wheelers constituted 52.26% share in mode of transport in 1981, which grew to 76.23% in 2009. This resulted in a fall in the usage of three-wheeler auto-rickshaws for daily commuting. In 1981, the share of three-wheelers was 10.11%, which reduced to 5.27% in 2009.

The total number of vehicles in the city touched the 18-lakh mark in 2009; it was just 45,000 in 1971. Of these, nearly 78% were two-wheelers, including motorcycles and small mopeds. As against this massive two-wheeler population, four-wheelers constituted only 13% of total vehicles on city roads in 2009.

The research was conducted to strengthen traffic management in Ahmedabad. According to MM Anarwala, deputy commissioner of police, traffic, the only solution to prevent congestion on city roads because of increasing number of two-wheelers is the use of public transport system.

"BRTS and metro rail are part of the strategy that will help us clear two-wheelers from roads," he said. He added that it was getting difficult to accommodate two-wheelers in parking spaces. He is for imposing strict norms for parking. "If we don't act fast, we will run out of parking spaces,” said Anarwala.
