More Indians to be pulled out of Libya tomorrow

Nearly 33% of Indians, stuck in strife-torn Libya, would be pulled out of that country by tomorrow as the latest evacuation would take the number of those either brought back or taken to safe destinations to 6,177.

"By tonite (tonight), 6,177 Indians would have been evacuated from Libya. This would be 33% of our people there," foreign secretary Nirupama Rao tweeted.

Three special Air India flights, two Boeing 747s and one Airbus-330, went to Tripoli yesterday and brought back 1,045 Indian nationals and another three flights have left for Tripoli and are expected to ferry back 1,002 passengers, the ministry of external affairs said in Delhi.

It said three daily flights to Tripoli shall continue over the coming days and may even be stepped up further.

Meanwhile, MV Scotia Prince sailed out of Benghazi (Libya) with 1188 persons, who will brought back by four special flights tomorrow, it said.

Separately, a chartered flight carrying 78 Indians from Sirte (Libya) reached Larnaca (Cyprus) last evening and will be booked on commercial flights to India.

So far, 126 Indians have left Libya in small numbers on their own, in coordination with our missions in and around Libya, the ministry said.

It also added that 267 Indians have, by now, crossed over to Salloum (Egypt) by land route and the Indian embassy in Cairo has already facilitated the return of some 180 of them in batches, to Mumbai by regular Gulf Air flights.

Furthermore, close to 1,400 persons have reached Djerba in Alegeria, where the Indian embassy personnel from Tunis have assisted them to be housed in local hotels. Special flights are also being scheduled to bring them back home soon.
