Monsoon in full force; rains lash Gujarat, except Kutch

It rained heavily in the last 36 hours in most parts of Gujarat including Saurashtra. Reports say 5 dams overflowed in Junagadh and a total 26 in the region received fresh water.

It rained heavily in the last 36 hours in most parts of Gujarat including Saurashtra. Reports say 5 dams overflowed in Junagadh and a total 26 in the region received fresh water. However, no rainfall in Kutch district was reported.

The district has received only 15% rainfall of its ten-year average this monsoon.

Maximum rainfall of 12-14 inches was recorded in Bhalechada, Kodvav, Koplala and Mandedara areas in Manavadar taluka of Junagadh district. Five dams in Junagadh and nine in Saurashtra region reported overflowing due to flow of fresh waters.

No casualty was reported from the districts but the state highway between Manavadar and Porbandar was closed to traffic due to floods in Bhadar River.   

Between Sunday morning and Monday evening, Junagadh district received 80-198 mm rainfall in all taluka areas. Heavy rainfall was recorded at Veraval (198 mm), Visavadar (196 mm), Manavadar (193 mm), Sutrapada (191 mm), Talala (152 mm), Mangrol (137 mm) and Maliya (126 mm). Junagadh city recorded 102 mm of rainfall in the same period.

Rajkot district recorded 10-105 mm rainfall in the last 36 hours. Upleta got the highest precipitation (131 mm) in the district followed by Jamkandorna (105 mm) Dhoraji (90 mm), Jasdan (82 mm) and Jetpur (75 mm). Rajkot city received 63 mm rainfall during the period. Nayri dam, which supplies drinking water to the city, overflowed on Monday evening.

Amreli was another district to receive benevolence from the rain gods as 2-75mm rainfall was recorded in last 36 hours. Bagasara taluka in the district got the maximum, 73 mm, rain.  Jamnagar district (2-94 mm) also recorded good rainfall with a maximum 94 mm at Lalpur. 

Porbandar (113 mm), Kutiyana (124 mm) and Ranavav (84 mm)
recorded rainfall in Porbandar district; however, there was no rainfall on Monday in the area.
