Modernising textile industry pivotal says Dayanidhi Maran

Modernising technology in production processes was the key requirement to remaining competitive in the globalised textile industry and the environment,Union Textiles Minister Dayanidhi Maran said today

Inaugurating Karnataka's first Integrated Textile Park here at Rs 250 crore investment, he said establishment of modern weaving units in the park to provide jobs for about 8000 persons would serve as a "model for powerloom entrepreneurs in Doddaballapur cluster in particular and Karnataka in general".

"This park presents a huge opportunity in establishing sustainable market linkages with export oriented local garment industry, especially considering Bangalore is a major garment industry hub in India, exporting high quality goods to reputed international buyers," he said

Maran said his ministry has sanctioned Rs 34 crore of Rs 85 crore infrastructure cost for the park under the Scheme for Integrated Textile Park (SITP).

The balance would be raised by Special Purpose Vehicle through private sources and banks, he said, adding Karnataka government has sanctioned Rs 4.32 crore to the Park under Suvarna Vastra Neethi Scheme.

Describing SITP as one of the ministry's major initiatives to help the industry develop need based and self sufficient infrastructure, he said a total of 40 parks including the one here have been sanctioned throughout India, of which 21 are already operational.

These parks will involve a total investment of Rs 20,000 crore and generate employment for five lakh. "There is a huge demand for these parks and the government is now actively considering setting up a few more parks soon", Maran said.

He said the government, as part of encouraging the industry, had already placec in the public domain, a draft national fibre policy to provide a level playing field for harmonious growth of textile sector.

The government proposes to roll out an initiative for skill development to train 30 lakh workers over five years at an outlay of Rs 2,200 crore, he said.
