The World Classical Tamil Conference, scheduled to be held in Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu from June 23 to June 27, has sparked a war of words between DMK president and chief minister M Karunanidhi and his staunch opponent and AIADMK general secretary J Jayalalithaa.

Jayalalithaa had on Saturday accused Karunanidhi of being “inhuman and impolite”. Karunanidhi had spent crores of rupees to organise a Tamil literary conference, when Tamils in Sri Lanka were living in pathetic conditions, she said.

“The fate of internally displaced persons of Sri Lanka is akin to the sufferings of the people of Somalia and Ethiopia,” Jayalalithaa added.

In a prompt retort on Sunday, Karunanidhi said, “Some people were behaving like Gooni of Ramayan, who went all out to stop the crowning [Pattabhishekam] of Ram as the king of Ayodhya.”

The aim of the literary conference was to promote Tamil as a classical language and elicit support for the cause of suffering Sri Lankan Tamils, he said.

“The organisers of the conference are deeply concerned about the suffering Sri Lankan Tamils. We want to use this conference as a forum for generating more financial aid for their cause. This conference has the confidence of global Tamils, who have heartily welcomed the event. The vision of this conference is to foster the growth of classical Tamil and Tamil people,” he remarked.

“I am grateful to have received overwhelming support for conducting the conference. At a time when a few persons are behaving like the mythical Gooni of Ramayan, the support from global Tamils is heartening,” he said.
