In a gory reminder of the violence that rocked Naroda several years back, a mob of around 50 people set a guesthouse on fire on Monday night. The mob took the law into its own hands as it wanted to “teach a lesson” to those involved in alleged flesh trade at the guesthouse.

On Monday night, it was reported that three people had suffered burn injuries after fire broke out at the guesthouse. But on Tuesday, the police revealed that the guesthouse was actually set on fire by people who wanted all ‘illegal activity’ to cease there. Moreover, the three people who were injured in the fire were all women.

Of the three injured women, one died soon after the incident. She was later identified as a sex worker from Kolkata. The two others who are in hospital are also said to be sex workers. The Naroda police have lodged a case against an unidentified mob under section 302 of IPC (murder).

According to Naroda police inspector GH Gohil, the incident took place at around 9:30 pm on Monday when a large number of people gathered outside the Deluxe Guesthouse located at Thakkarnagar crossroads.

They pelted stones and manhandled the guesthouse officials before setting it on fire.

The fire brigade was informed but before firemen could arrive the guesthouse was in flames. The people who were inside the building could not come out fearing the mob’s fury. It took several hours for five fire-tenders to bring the fire under control.

Inspector Gohil said the mob wanted the guesthouse to be shut because “illegal activity” was going on there. “In fact, we had raided the guesthouse twice in the recent past but the owner managed to get bail and returned to his illegal activities there. On Monday night, around 50 people suddenly appeared and started pelting stones at the guesthouse before setting it on fire. They later fled,” he said.

While one alleged sex worker died in the fire, two others suffered injuries because they could not get out of the building out of fear of the mob. One Lalji Patel has lodged a case in this regard with the Naroda police.
