Mob fury: Villagers lynch 9 ‘thieves’ near Bangalore

On seeing a group with sacks filled with coins and old metal, villagers assumed they were thieves and killed them.

Villagers brutally beat to death nine unidentified persons, suspected to be thieves, in Chinthamani village of Chickballapur on Tuesday afternoon. The victims had come in a group of 11 in a Tata Sumo to the village claiming to sell old coins, jewellery and other metals. 

 
On seeing the group with sacks filled with coins and old metal, villagers assumed they were thieves and first killed six among them. Three others tried to escape but were chased and beaten to death. Two others sustained serious head injuries and have been admitted to NIMHANS in Bangalore.
 
The bodies have been kept at Chinthamani Government Hospital.
 
The Kencharahalli police said the group had dispersed when the crowd charged at them.
 
While the first six deaths happened at Yerakote, about 20 km from Kencharahalli police station, the other three were killed near Bachuvar between Chinthamani and Murugamalla Gate.
 
The area has seen a lot of violence lately due to a spate of theft cases.
