Defying curfew, a mob pelted stones at the residence of Congress leader and J&K school education minister Peerzada Mohammad Sayeed on Sunday. Sayeed was celebrating Eid with his family at his residence in Damhal-Khusipora in Anantnag district.

Police lobbed tear gas shells and opened fire at the crowd to disperse them. A few people were injured in the attack.
Sayeed has held the Hurriyat Conference and miscreants responsible for the attack. “Hurriyat activists, miscreants and released militants attacked my house. I had gone to my village to celebrate Eid with my family, which they did not like,” he told DNA.

“For the first time in the last three months, pro-India slogans were being chanted in my village. Hundreds of protesters had tried to barge into my house but my supporters foiled their attempts,” Sayeed said.

To prevent the mob violence from escalating, authorities imposed curfew in Srinagar and other towns in the valley. Protesters, however, defied curfew and also pelted stones on the police and paramilitary personnel. Some people even pelted stones on a police post at Pothkhak in Sopore.

Demonstrators also defied curfew at Boatman Colony, Bemina, in Srinagar and pelted stones on security personnel.

“Eight policemen were injured in a stone-pelting attack at Azad Gunj, Baramulla. Demonstrators also damaged a CRPF mobile bunker with a petrol bomb,” a police spokesman said.

Protestors also tried to attack police lines at Awantipora. However, police resorted to lathi charge and tear gas shells to disperse the mob. “One miscreant was injured. His condition is stable,” he said.

Stone pelting was also reported from Drangbal in Pampore. “Some miscreants resorted to heavy stone pelting on police and other security forces deployed at Sabzi Mandi, Soura, and Gaw Kadal in Srinagar. One person identified as Samir Ahmad Bhat was injured in the Gaw Kadal incident,” the police spokesman said.

Police said a mob torched a government middle school at Wangam-Kralgund in Handwara.

Thousands of police and CRPF personnel were deployed on the streets to impose curfew. Concertina wires were also put on the roads to restrict movement. “We have been given strict instructions not to allow anyone to move around,” a police officer said.
