In the wake of adverse effects of climate change, the Centre would soon announce a National Mission for Clean Coal (Carbon) Technologies that include development of advanced ultra supercritical technology for thermal power plants, a top official said.

"The National Mission for Clean Coal (Carbon) technologies will be soon announced. It will have several sub-missions like development of advanced ultra supercritical boilers for thermal power plants and carbon capture," principal scientific advisor to government of India, R Chidambaram said.

He was speaking at the Asian Nuclear Prospects 2010 (ANUP 2010) a conference on nuclear power in Asia here last night.

800 MW ultra supercritical boilers that can operate at very high temperatures would be designed and developed by three  organisations - Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd, NTPC Ltd and Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research, he said.

"The project report has to be prepared now. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed between the three organisations," he told reporters when asked about the project
outlay and the mode of funding.

He said the government is looking at international cooperation for this project on mutually beneficial terms.

As per plans, IGCAR will design and develop the ultra supercritical boiler that can operate at a pressure of 350 bar (a measure of steam pressure) and at a temperature of 700 degree centigrade. BHEL will manufacture the boiler and other equipment for power generation and NTPC will operate the plant.

The whole project, from design, development, manufacturing, plant construction and commissioning would involve an outlay of around Rs 10,000 crore.

Construction of the plant is expected to start by 2018.
