The weather department in Ahmedabad plans to educate people on climate change to celebrate World Meteorological Day this year. An exhibition of weather monitoring equipment and a talk by an expert are on the cards.

Every year on March 23, the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) and the international meteorological community together celebrate the day to commemorate the coming into force of the WMO Convention on March 23, 1950.

The theme of this year's celebration is 'Climate for You'. India Meteorology Department (IMD), director for Gujarat, Dr Kamaljit Ray, said that IMD plans to celebrate the day on Wednesday by organising an exhibition.

"Students from nearby schools, meteorologists and office-bearers from IMD will visit the exhibition which has on display all weather parameter monitoring instruments. Visitors will get to learn how we use these instruments to monitor weather," he said.

IMD has also organised a talk by Dr SR Kalsi, retired official of the department on 'Climate for You' at 4pm at the Meteorological Centre in Ahmedabad. The exhibition has been arranged on the premises of IMD office near the airport between 10 am and 4 pm.
Visitors at the exhibition will be briefed on various climate change concerns and workings of the weather department. "IMD has organised the exhibition and a talk for spreading awareness on the importance of weather in our day-to-day life and also to educate the visitor on how each individual contributes to the changing climate," added Ray.

The Meteorological Observatory, Ahmedabad, which was established on  January 18, 1893 and the Meteorological Centre, Ahmedabad, set up in October 1974, have the latest weather monitoring equipment.

These include the Digital Met Data Dissemination (DMDD), a ground-based satellite system for reception and dissemination of meteorological information, High Speed Data Terminal (HSDT) System, a 256 Kbps data circuit for transmission and reception of meteorological data, High Performance Computing System (HPCS), a platform for high resolution weather modelling, Cyclone Warning Dissemination System (CWDS), 10.X-Band Weather RADAR and Automatic Radiation Sensor.

IMD has been celebrating WMO day each year with different themes. Following the First World Climate Conference, organised in 1979 to consider the looming threat of climate change and its potential impact, WMO has been globally recognised as an active platform to raise public awareness.
