After complaints that the conditions at the Commonwealth Games Village in New Delhi are "filthy and uninhabitable", additional sanitation staff from Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) were today pressed into service to clean the towers.

"We have deployed around 125 sanitation workers at the Village for cleaning operations after our support was sought," Municipal Corporation of Delhi spokesperson Deep Mathur said.

The Commonwealth Games organising committee (OC), which was till now using the services of private sanitation staff to ensure maintenance and cleanliness at the Village, requested both Delhi and Central governments for additional personnel after which the MCD staff were requisitioned.

"We are ready to provide all-out support to the OC. They have now sought more personnel and we will be deploying 125 additional sanitation staff at the Village tomorrow, taking the total number of MCD workers there to 250. Deputy commissioner of Shahdara (south) Brig (retd) Rajinder Singh will supervise the cleaning drive," Mathur said.

In an embarrassment to the organisers less than two weeks before the Commonwealth Games, the CGF yesterday termed the Athletes Village "filthy and uninhabitable" and gave OC two days time to sort out the mess.
