With an eye on assembly polls and in an attempt to woo the tribals, chief minister Narendra Modi performed the ground-breaking ceremony of development work worth Rs8.22 crore in Jambughoda taluka of Panchmahals district on Sunday.

At a rally held in the tribal dominated taluka, Modi paid tribute to the five unsung heroes of the community who sacrificed their lives fighting the British.

Taking a pot shot at the Congress, Modi said it was unfortunate that sacrifices of a large number of martyrs, who laid their lives for the freedom, were deliberately erased by some elements.

"Martyrdom is not the monopoly of a single family as deliberately and intentionally described by some people," he said, while paying tribute to tribal martyrs Joriya Parmeshwar, Rupsingh Nayak, Galaliya Nayak, Ravjida Nayak and Babariya Galma Nayak, who were hanged to death on April, 16, 1868, by the British in Jambughoda.

He also said that the state-level Van Mahotsav of 2012 would be celebrated at Mangadh hills of Panchmahals to commemorate the sacrifice of local martyr Govind Guru, who was shot dead by the British. He also announced a memorial and Tribal Martyr Day celebration henceforth every year on April 16.

Earlier in the day, Modi at a state-level pulse polio function in Gandhinagar appealed to the people to eradicate malnutrition from Gujarat, just as the they had helped in eradicating polio. The chief minister also revealed the govt's plans to bring 10 lakh hectares of agricultural land under micro irrigation in the coming year while inaugurating an Israeli firm's new plant in Savli. He said that at present 7 lakh hectares of agriculture land was under drip irrigation.
