When the West Bengal government announced recently that it would help Maoists get married and lead a happy life if they shunned the path of extremism and joined the mainstream, it could have unknowingly given the Left extremists a wonderful idea to swell their ranks.

Taking a clue from the government proposal and paying it back in its own coin, the ultras recently held a “mass comrade marriage” ceremony where several Maoist couples tied knots.

The idea was simple — marriage of extremist ideologies would ensure that guerrillas do not think of returning to the mainstream.

The police came to know of the secret ceremony from Nandakumar alias Anand alias Nakul, Maoist area commander in Puruliya who was arrested recently.

Nandakumar too got married at the same function but his honeymoon with wife Chabi was short since he was nabbed by the police just five days later.

The mass marriage took place at a secret location in the Maoist-affected Ayodhya hills in Puruliya district last week. It was not a traditional marriage, though.

Here, couples had to not only swear to be faithful to each other but also to the ideology of revolution by placing hands on the “Maoist red book”. CPI(Maoist) West Bengal secretary Kanchan, who presided over the function, gifted the newlyweds Insas and AK-series rifles.

Nandakumar told the police that another top Maoist area commander Ranjit  Pal also got married at the function. Ranjit’s wife Anita is also a most-wanted guerrilla. Both Nandakumar and Ranjit were part of the Maoist team that attacked a camp of Eastern Frontier Rifles at Silda in West Midnapore district on February 15, 2010, killing 24 jawans.

Nandakumar told the police that marrying comrades was compulsory for Maoists. “However, this is the first time such a ceremony was held,” a senior state police officer said.
