A goods train was derailed early on Saturday as suspected Maoists blew up the railway track near Chandiposh station, about 70 km from here.

The guard of the freight train escaped unhurt as the explosion took place just after the train passed the spot but the guard's bogey derailed under the impact of the blast, the police said.

Armed Maoists used powerful explosives to blow up about four feet railway track, the police said.

The explosion took place at about 500 metre from Chandiposh railway station and the guard of the goods train, KRN Nair, escaped unhurt, they said.

"I had a narrow escape. No one was injured in the incident," Nair said.

Senior police and railway officials rushed to the spot and the track was repaired.

Normal traffic was restored on the route usually used by goods trains carrying minerals, police said.
