Maoist-sponsored bandh peaceful in East Godavari

The Maoist-sponsored 48-hour bandh to protest the killing of top Naxal leader Azad has been peaceful till now in East Godavari district, police officials said today.

The shutdown began yesterday.

Police pickets were set up at vulnerable points to prevent violent incidents.

State-run Road Transport Corporation (RTC) has cancelled night bus services on select routes of the district to avoid any untoward incident, a police official said.

An RTC spokesman said run buses are being run on important routes only.

"No untoward incident was reported from any part of the nine mandals in the district," a police spokesman said. The police forces are keeping a vigil at important sites, including private and public offices, he added.

Jungle trails and camps would be set up at ten strategic locations to make school children aware about natural resources, environment and wildlife and allow them to actually explore eco tourism, Tiwari said, adding the camps and trails are also targetted at  middle class wildlife tourists.

Each camp situated in a different forest ecosystems will provide a "unique ambience" and have ethnically designed comfortable accommodation units, he said.

Situated 12 km from Shimoga on Thirthahalli road, one can have close encounters with captive elephants at Sakrebyle Elephant Camp.

Nestled in a herbal garden, the camp also provides other eco activities like herbal trail, bird trek and boating, Tiwari said.

Located 12 km from Dandeli in Dandeli Wildlife sanctuary, Kulagi Timber Trails camp is the best place for jungle safari, hornbill safari, cave exploration and timber trails. Four out of the six hornbill species can be sighted here at any time.

Anshi Evergreen Camp, situated in evergreen forests of Anshi national park on the Belgaum-Karwar highway will provide the tourists first hand experience of evergreen forests, mountain biking, treks and machan nightouts.

If one wants to tread the paths traversed by forest brigand the late Veerappan, one can visit the Gopinatham Country Camp and explore the "mystery trails", he said.

Situated in Gopinatham village in Cauvery Wildlife Sanctuary 34 km from Malemadeshwara Hills, the camp provides excellent opportunity for birding, nature walks,and mountain biking to Hogenakkal falls.

The Bhagawati Herbal Camp is situated nine km from Kudremukh on Kalasa-Karkala road.One can trek to Kurinjal peak, go on jungle safari, walk in herbal trail and have nightouts at the machan, Tiwari said.

The Seetanadi Herpeto Camp, situated in Someshwara wildlife sanctuary near Hebri town in Shimoga district will offer river rafting in Seeta river and nature treks.

Aanejhari Butterfly Camp is situated just 5 kms from the famous Kollour Mookambika temple while the Muthodi Trogon Camp, located on the fringe of Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary, 34 km from Chikmagalur, is a birdwatcher's paradise.

Castle Rock Adventure Camp, on the Karnataka-Goa border, provides various adventure activities like mountain biking, rock climbing,trek to Kuveshi point and Doodhsagar falls.

Located on the foothills of Jogimatii Reserve Forest in Chitradurga town, the camp provides the best experience of scrub forests of the plains. Besides camping and bird watching, trek to the famous Chitradurga fort and Jogimatti peak are the other attractions.

All these trails and camps will become operational by September this year, Tiwari said.
