After establishing a series of new universities in the recent years, the state government is going to set up a specialised institute in the area of infrastructure, technology, research and management. Sources in the government have indicated that the campus for the institute will come up in Maninagar, the assembly constituency of chief minister Narendra Modi, as Ahmedabad is intended to be its headquarters.

A bill which will pave the way for setting up 'The Institute of Infrastructure, Technology, Research And  Management (IITRAM)' will be tabled in the coming budget session of the assembly. IITRAM will impart education in the areas of technology, management, engineering, science, infrastructure and allied areas.

According to sources, IITRAM will aim at creating a centre of excellence in the fields of engineering and technology, applied sciences and management sciences. "When fully functional, the institute will have a total capacity of about 2,000 students on the campus. Out of these, 50 per cent will be undergraduate students. The remaining students will be from post-graduation, doctoral and sponsored courses in the area of engineering and management," said the sources.

The total expenses for setting up IITRAM are expected to be around Rs500 crore; the state government will be giving Rs85 crore. "The budgetary allocation for current financial year is Rs18 crore and for the financial year 2012-13, it is of Rs67 crore. Of Rs67 crore, Rs47 crore would be for capital expenditure, Rs10 crore for recurring expenses, and Rs10 crore for non-recurring expenses," says the bill.

Another bill that will be presented in the budget session is the Gujarat Public Trusts (Repeal) Bill, 2012. The government had enacted the Gujarat Public Trusts Act in 2011. Later, it had faced protests from religious leaders and charitable trusts.
