Low production of mangoes this year has put the canning industry in south Gujarat in a spot. They are finding it hard to cope with production requirements.

As a result, many companies are planning to purchase mangoes from Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Delhi.

Due to unseasonal rain and winds, mango production has been hit hard in the region. Only 30% mango production is expected this year, which is also coming into the yards later than usual.

Experts say that unlike the usual trend, where mango season lasts for two months, it will be 15 days only this season. The canning industry will lose more than Rs500 crore this year.  There are more than 30 small, medium and large sized canning factories in the region. Majority of production is exported to USA, UK, Canada and other countries.

The month of June is arriving, but till now the canning industry has been unable to start production. Barring some big players who are producing on a marginal basis, rest of the industry is waiting for mangoes to arrive in the markets.

“We require more than 3,000 tons of mangoes, but looking at the current situation, we can hardly get 1,500 tons. As production is less, farmers are going to charge higher prices. This will increase our costs and naturally price of pulp will increase,” Satish Nayak, chairman of a canning factory at Gandevi, said.

Nayak added that mangoes from local villages are yet to come into the markets. In many areas, mangoes are still under-developed.

“We used to store mangoes during the season and continue production round the year. This year, the situation is not suitable for us, but we have to survive at any cost.

We are planning to source mangoes from other states,” said Vipul Desai, director of a Valsad-based canning company.
