A 50-year-old man was arrested on Sunday for raping his 31-year-old daughter for over 14 years. The woman, who is married and has two kids, finally worked up the courage to lodge an FIR against her father, Bishnu Mohan Panda, on Friday. She decided to go to the police after he attacked her with a sharp weapon for spurning him. She was badly hurt and had to be admitted in hospital.
Panda, a shop owner from Rajgurupur village in Bhad-rak district, first raped Binodini when she was 16. Thereafter, he did it repeatedly, whenever no one was at home. Binodini reportedly underwent 15 abortions in the past 14 years. Her mother, Rukmini, knew about it but kept quiet.
Years later, Panda married Binodini off to a drunk from a nearby village. He then persuaded his son-in-law to come and stay with him. Binodini had no choice but to obey her husband, who was happy to stay with his father-in-law.
Whenever his son-in-law was not around, Panda returned to his old ways. On August 30, when Binodini told her father that she’s going to expose him, he attacked her and she landed in hospital. When journalists got to know of the attack, the woman’s parents got alarmed. They urged doctors to discharge Binodini as they wanted to take her to another hospital for treatment. But they confined her at home.
However, Binodini managed to get out and lodged the FIR on Friday. Police nabbed Panda on Sunday and sent him to jail. Senior divisional police officer Srikrushna Behera said, “There must be something to it. No daughter would make such allegations against her father,” he said.
Binodini, who is staying with her children in an NGO for the past two days, said, “Exemplary punishment should be given to my father so that no father would ever dare commit such a heinous crime.” She said, “I thought about it several times, but kept quiet for the sake of family honour.”
