He had been a small-time thief until he decided to go at it hammer and tongs — all for his son. And the speed with which he stole bikes (10 vehicles in three moths) even left the police stunned. But it wasn't to give his son a life of luxury that Riaz alias Raju Sheikh, 21, stole these bikes. It was a father's last and desperate attempt to ensure that his six-month-old son lived long.

For, Sheikh's son had been suffering from kidney disease and the father needed Rs80,000 to fund the operation that the infant urgently needed. When friends and relatives could not help him financially he turned to what he knew well —stealing bikes.

Sheikh was nabbed from Paldi by the Ellisbridge police station on Friday, while his son's condition continues to be critical. Sheikh, during interrogation, told cops that he went on a bike stealing spree to get the Rs80,000 that he needed for his son's operations.

Though the cops were initially sceptical of his story, a visit to his home revealed that he was indeed speaking the truth.
"We went to his house and saw that his son is indeed suffering from a kidney disease. We now know his motive. But we can't do anything as we will have to follow the law," police inspector, Ellisbridge police station, BK Purohit told DNA.

Purohit also said that Sheikh's stealing increased dramatically in the last few months after he came to know of his son's condition.
The police found that, Sheikh has so far stolen 16 bikes, 10 of which were taken after he found that he needed to get his son operated immediately.

Sheikh, in his statement told police that he tried seeking help from relatives but they did not help him so there was only one way out.
Sheikh lives in Viramgaam, but used to come to the city to steal bikes. He would later sell the stolen bikes in and around Viramgaam. He was stopped by city police near Mahalaxmi Cross Roads on Friday evening as part of a random checking.

However, he could not produce the necessary documents for the vehicle following which he was arrested.
